WordPress Maintenance UK

Bespoke WordPress and WooCommerce maintenance retainers from a senior UK-based developer. Tested updates, backups you can actually restore, monitoring that someone is watching, and a named engineer who already knows your site when something breaks.

14+ years experience • 70+ sites under management • Based in Hampshire, working UK‑wide

What a Maintenance Retainer Covers

The unglamorous work that keeps a WordPress site secure, fast and online, done by someone who reads the changelog before clicking Update.

Tested updates

WordPress core, plugin and theme updates applied on a schedule, security patches applied as soon as they land, and staging-first testing for sites where a broken update means lost revenue.

Backups you can restore

Daily file and database backups stored away from the web server, with restores actually tested. A backup nobody has ever restored is a hope, not a plan.

Security monitoring

File integrity checks, malware scanning, login hardening and a watch on disclosed vulnerabilities for the plugins you run, so known holes are closed before they are used.

Uptime and performance monitoring

Uptime checks with alerts that reach a person, plus an eye on the trends behind outages: PHP worker exhaustion, slow queries, database growth and disk filling up.

Incident response included

When something does break, retained clients go to the front of the queue and the fix is handled by the engineer who already has access and context. No onboarding in a crisis.

Developer time

Retainers include hours for the small changes, fixes and improvements every live site needs, so you are not raising a quote for every tweak.

Who Works With Rootscope

Web agencies

You build and design, I keep the sites running. White-label where you need it, direct with your clients where you prefer. Several UK agencies use Rootscope as their quiet technical back office.

Businesses without a developer

The site was built by a freelancer or agency who has moved on. You need someone accountable for it who answers the phone, without hiring in-house.

WooCommerce stores

Payment gateways, subscriptions, Action Scheduler queues and a database that grows every day. Stores need maintenance that understands how an ecommerce site fails, not just how to click Update.

Bespoke Retainer or Fixed-Price Plan?

Rootscope offers both. The right one depends on how much custom code and how many moving parts your site has.

Bespoke retainer (this page)

  • ✓ Scope agreed around your site or portfolio
  • ✓ Quoted per site; invoiced monthly, no long contract
  • ✓ Includes developer hours and staging workflows
  • ✓ Server and hosting management can be included
  • ✓ Best for agencies, custom builds and busy WooCommerce stores

Not sure which fits? Send me the URL and I will tell you honestly, including when a fixed-price plan is the better deal.

Why UK-Based Maintenance Matters

Same hours as your business

Updates run and problems get fixed while you are at work, not overnight in another timezone. If something breaks on a Tuesday afternoon, it gets looked at on a Tuesday afternoon.

UK GDPR, UK company

Rootscope Limited is a UK registered company. I understand what WordPress and its plugins do with personal data, can keep backups in UK or EU regions, and will sign a data processing agreement if your compliance needs one.

UK hosting experience

Krystal, 20i, Fasthosts, IONOS and TSOHost alongside Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudflare and self-managed VPS hosting. I know where each one hides its logs and what each one gets wrong.

How a Retainer Starts

  1. 01

    Site audit

I review the WordPress install, plugins, theme code, hosting, security posture and performance baseline, and send you a written report with anything that needs attention now.

  2. 02

    Scope and quote

We agree what the retainer covers: update cadence, staging, monitoring, developer hours, server management and response expectations. You get a fixed monthly figure.

  3. 03

    Onboarding

Credentials go into an encrypted password manager, never email. Monitoring and off-server backups are set up and a first restore is tested before the retainer officially begins.

  4. 04

    Monthly rhythm

Updates on schedule, security patches as they appear, monitoring reviewed daily, and a plain-English monthly report of what was done, what was found and what I recommend next.

WordPress Maintenance Questions

How much does WordPress maintenance cost in the UK?
It depends on the site. A bespoke Rootscope retainer is quoted per site or portfolio and priced on update frequency, staging, monitoring, developer hours and response times. For standard business sites, the fixed-price plans on wp-maintenance.pro publish their pricing openly and are usually the cheaper option.
Do you maintain sites you did not build?
Yes, most of them. Every retainer starts with an audit so I know what I am taking on, and the first month usually includes clearing a backlog of updates and tidying up whatever the previous developer left behind.
Do I need to move hosting?
No. I work with whatever UK or international host you are on. If the hosting itself is the problem I will tell you, and I can manage a migration or a VPS for you if that is the right move.
Is there a minimum contract?
Retainers are invoiced monthly with no long-term lock-in. If the arrangement is not working for you, you can stop it. Most clients stay for years because the site simply stops being a worry.
Can you work white-label for my agency?
Yes. I can report to you rather than your clients, use your branding on reports, and stay invisible in client communication. Several UK agencies run their maintenance this way.
What happens when something breaks?
Retained clients get priority response during UK business hours from the engineer who already has access and knows the site. For urgent one-off problems on sites not under a retainer, see the emergency support page.
